Hazelnuts of Senaki
In the Georgian region of Senaki, hazelnut cultivation has become an important part of agriculture. Thanks to the favorable climate and fertile soil, high-quality hazelnuts with a rich flavor thrive here. Local farmers use both traditional and modern cultivation methods to ensure high yields. Georgian hazelnuts are sought after in international markets for their quality and exceptional taste. Senaki thus plays a key role in the development of this sector in the country. The Senaki region in Georgia is one of the country’s main areas for hazelnut cultivation. Thanks to its mild climate, with an average annual temperature of around 14–16°C, and fertile soil with a pH ranging between 5.5 and 7.0, hazelnuts thrive exceptionally well here. The region receives an average of 1,500– 2,000 mm of rainfall per year, which provides adequate moisture for hazelnut orchards.
Hazelnuts Cultivation
The process begins with the careful selection of high-quality seedlings, usually of the Corylus avellana variety. The harvest season in Senaki takes place mainly from August to September when the nuts reach full maturity. Farmers use both mechanical and manual harvesting methods, with traditional handpicking still widely practiced. The average yield per hectare varies between 1.5 and 3.0 tons, depending on the farming techniques and environmental conditions. After harvesting, the nuts are dried to a moisture content of around 6% to preserve their quality and extend their shelf life. They are then sorted and processed for export, with Georgia producing over 40,000 tons of hazelnuts annually, making it one of the top global suppliers. Local growers are increasingly investing in modern technologies, such as automated irrigation systems and improved pest control measures, to enhance productivity and maintain high-quality standards. Sustainable farming practices, including organic fertilization and soil conservation, are also gaining importance. Hazelnuts from the Senaki region are known for their high oil content (around 60%), excellent taste, and rich nutritional value, making them a highly sought-after product on international markets. This sector significantly contributes to the region’s economic growth and provides employment opportunities for thousands of local farmers and workers.
